9 Free Ways To Make Facebook Go To Work (For You!)

by Lawton Chiles on November 6, 2009

You’ve signed up for Facebook, like your friends told you to do. You’ve uploaded a profile picture, entered in some text about who you are, that you work for a real company, heck, even that you went to high school or college in a (respectable) place. Now what?

How do you take your Facebook marketing to the level you want-a lead generating, cash-pumping fat cow?

1. Start Small, Then Grow

Don’t feel like you need to get it all done in one day-or one week. Let’s take it slow. Facebook will give you plenty of opportunities with 300,000 folks joining everyday :) Just get the main things done first, like putting in your contact details, where you work and uploading a Profile Picture.

2. Slowly Expand

Get into the game by inviting your Gmail, Hotmail, AOL, or work contacts to join you on Facebook. Share pictures, videos, thoughts, and relevant links with those friends on your Facebook wall.

3. Build Into Lists

You can easily sort your friends by lists. For example, I have all my Tallahassee contact in a Tallahassee list. I have all my family in my Family list. Just click on Friends, and then All Friends or wait until Facebook gives you the Friends tab. On the right of  your Facebook wall is the tab where you can make lists. It looks like this: See how you can put the lists into easy bits of info? Here’s what the tab looks like that you need to click on to get it to happen

4. Ask Questions, Give Thoughtful Responses

Be meaningful when someone asks a question on Facebook. Keep in mind that others are reading this stuff and you want to at least (appear) to know what you’re talking about :) Also, asking questions is a great way to get massive comments coming back onto your wall.

5. Use the funnel

Instead of posting 50 pictures at once, try posting 5-7 or even just ONE. Watch your comments go up-others see their friends commenting and guess what? They might want to comment too. Take advantage of this social wave and ride it.

6. Please Recycle

Recycle blog posts, old pics, videos and more. Ask a question that gets a lot of response and then, in a month, ask it again or a different way. One time, I said to my friends, “What was your favorite cheeseburger and where did you have it?” My wall lit up! The key to this is doing it more than once but not too often as to be annoying.

7. Use lists

People love lists. Do your friends like food blogs, tech gadgets, tips or raising their rascal? Why not compile a big list of blogs they might like and post it on Facebook? Think on this a minute. Most of my friends like the posts from my vacation, different places I went, sunsets, etc. What if I found a post online like The 10 Best Sunsets Ever? Think they’d like that? You bet! You can do the same thing.

8. Hey People, What’s That Sound?

The power of music is no secret. People love their bands, and argue constantly on this one subject in cramped cars everywhere. Who is right? Who cares whem you can ask your friends what their favorite band or song is on Facebook-you’ll rack up huge comments and profile love :)

9. Create Events To Push Business

Using Facebook to host events is easy. Not many business are doing it though. What about a local business owners group that meets once a week to talk marketing-think that could get some attention in your area? How about an Email Marketing Over Coffee? Leave me some event ideas in the comments, if you would be so kind.

Well, we talked about using quotes, songs, asking questions, using events, lists, funnels and responding to folks. What is the next step we should take?
